Share Your Day-In-The-Life Stories with NAEHCY

Quickly: Define what you do in 10 words or less! How about 30 words? Hard to do, right? You enroll homeless children and youth, you educate your colleagues, you locate and pool resources, make connections and create opportunities in your community. NAEHCY would like to expand our public awareness efforts to include what a typical day is like as a homeless education liaison or allied advocate working with homeless children, youth, and families in public schools.

Samples that have been written and published in past issues of NAEHCY’s newsletter, The BEAM, are listed below.

Comparing Services Before and After the 2001 Reauthorization of McKinney-Vento
Eileen Sandell, Homeless Education Liaison, Berks County Intermediate Unit Homeless Student Program (PA; 2000)
Beth Winterbottom, Regional Coordinator, Berks County Intermediate Unit Homeless Student Program (PA; 2007)

Submission information:

You are invited to participate in an initiative to help the public learn about the role of the homeless education liaison and other advocates who support children, youth, and families in public schools. NAEHCY will compile an aggregate report of what daily life is like in the field for liaisons and publish individual stories on our web site. This information will equip us to communicate more effectively to other stakeholders how the role of the liaison is critical to the academic success of children and youth.

Procedure

If you choose to participate, we ask you to submit a day-in-the-life entry. This can be in list or narrative form, or a combination. Samples are posted above.

Confidentiality

Some participants may be uncomfortable sharing information about situations, events, or conflicts that might identify vulnerable families and youth or that might reveal sensitive information about communities and schools. We will make every effort to protect this information. Pseudonyms will be used for any children, youth, or families mentioned in the article. If desired, submissions can be anonymous. NAEHCY will remove any identifying information prior to publication where requested. All participants will have the final say on what is published. All submissions and communications relating to them will be kept in a password protected file on Jodi Mincemoyer’s computer.
