In 2013-2014 public schools enrolled 1,360,747 homeless children and youth. This is an 8% increase over the previous year, and a 100% increase since 2006-2007. Homeless children and youth report that school is a home to them – a place where they see the same faces, sit in the same seat, and can put their hearts and minds into pursuits that ease their daily troubles.
Children and youth experiencing homelessness are invisible in our communities and throughout our nation. They suffer out of sight of the general public, policymakers, and even school personnel. Left unaddressed, this lack of awareness contributes to misunderstanding and inaction, creating barriers to services and solutions.
The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) is a national membership association dedicated to educational excellence for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Through state and federal policy and technical assistance to our members, students, and the public, we change systems so all children and youth can learn, succeed academically and achieve their dreams.
Our members work in early childhood programs, public schools, state departments of education, institutions of higher education, and community organizations to support the identification, enrollment, attendance, and success of homeless children and youth, from early childhood through post-secondary education.
NAEHCY collects donations securely through EventBrite.
