Video Series on DVD

NAEHCY is pleased to present an exciting training tool: The McKinney-Vento Act in Our Schools video series.

NAEHCY's Legal Director, Patricia Julianelle, has created a series of videos that can be used to make your training sessions more dynamic. They build awareness of homelessness while providing basic information about the law, and schools' and communities' obligations to children and youth in homeless situations. This information is presented in a series of short films told from the perspective of real educators in schools. NAEHCY believes this new tool will support you and your districts as you deal with the daily challenges of helping our most vulnerable students.

The McKinney-Vento Act in Our Schools dvd includes a series of 10 short videos (8-11 minutes each) consisting of interviews with 70 people in 11 different school districts, both with and without McKinney-Vento subgrants. The dvd includes a separate video targeted to, and told in the voices of, each of the following school district and service provider roles:
  • Superintendents and School Board Members
  • Federal Programs Directors
  • McKinney-Vento Local Liaisons
  • Principals
  • School Counselors
  • School Social Workers
  • Registrars
  • Homeless Coalition and Shelter Directors
Two final videos are designed specifically for use with community organizations, faith-based congregations, and civic groups to raise awareness and spark their involvement in and contributions to McKinney-Vento programs.

Topics covered in the videos include:
  • A discussion of the effects of homelessness on a child's life and education
  • An exploration of the McKinney-Vento Act's definition of homelessness
  • An overview of the McKinney-Vento Act's core protections for students
  • A discussion of practical strategies to support students
