Welcome to the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY).

Did you know that 1,360,747 homeless students were reported enrolled by U.S. public schools in the 2013-2014 school year? Were you aware that 2/3 of the adults experiencing homelessness have not received a high school diploma or completed a GED?

On a regular basis, children and youth report that school is a home to them – a place where they see the same faces, sit in the same seat, and can put their hearts and minds into pursuits that ease their daily troubles. In school, students gain the skills and support needed to avoid poverty and homelessness as adults.

Education is the key to preventing homelessness for today’s children and youth. They absolutely need and deserve educational opportunities commensurate to those of their housed peers.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) is a national membership association dedicated to educational excellence for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Through state and federal policy and technical assistance to our members, students, and the public, we change systems so all children and youth can learn, succeed academically, and achieve their dreams. We provide professional development, resources, and training support for anyone and everyone interested in supporting the academic success of children and youth challenged by homelessness. We also engage in federal policy advocacy to strengthen policies and resources for homeless children, youth, and families. We are a grassroots membership organization that continually strives to meet the dynamic needs of our members. Our membership includes local homeless education liaisons, educators, school counselors, social workers, registrars, nurses, child advocates, shelter staff, state and federal policy specialists, and partners from community-based and national non-profit organizations.

As you explore our website you will find information on current legislation and advocacy efforts, research findings, professional development opportunities and tools, and many other resources to support your work with children and youth in your local community. We update the website frequently and invite you to visit often, but there are many other platforms for engagement with NAEHCY. We welcome ongoing support and dialogue through Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, and Google+ accounts.

The NAEHCY Board of Directors thanks you for your contribution to our collective national effort to ensure that ALL children receive appropriate services for their academic success and enrichment so that no child experiencing homelessness is left behind. Together, it is possible.
