Welcome to the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY).
Did you know that public schools enrolled nearly 1 million homeless children and youth in 2009-2010 – a 38% increase since 2006-2007? Were you aware that 2/3 of the adults experiencing homelessness have not received a high school diploma or completed a GED? Education is the key to preventing homelessness for today’s children and youth. They absolutely need and deserve educational opportunities commensurate to those of their housed peers.
NAEHCY is the only professional organization specifically dedicated to meeting the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. We provide professional development, resources, and training support for anyone and everyone interested in supporting the academic success of children and youth challenged by homelessness. We also engage in federal policy advocacy to strengthen policies and resources for homeless children, youth, and families. We are a grassroots membership organization that continually strives to meet the dynamic needs of our members. Our membership includes local homeless education liaisons, educators, school counselors, social workers, registrars, nurses, child advocates, shelter staff, state and federal policy specialists, and partners from community-based and national non-profit organizations.
As you explore our website you will find information on current legislation and advocacy efforts, research findings, professional development opportunities and tools, and many other resources to support your work with children and youth in your local community. We update the website frequently and invite you to visit often, but there are many other platforms for engagement with NAEHCY. We welcome ongoing support and dialogue through Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, and Google+ accounts.
